Chick

Chick

So, Lola needed a friend, and this chubby yellow fluff ball was just the thing for the job! The Farm Family wouldn’t be complete without him.

I like to keep my patterns hassle free, but that cute little tuft was a must and I can’t apologize for it. I can see this tiny fella turning up at baby showers and party favors alike. He is one to show up in bunches, not units.

Don’t believe me? Try making one… you’ll instantly feel the urge to crochet the next. 😉

Let's Get Stitchin'!

R 1 - 6 sc in MR.

R 2 - inc x 6 (12)

➜ In R 3, we’ll add a little tuft with one loop stitch.

For That Loop

  1. Insert your hook through the FLO of the stitch where you want the loop (see pic 1).
  2. Pull up a loop to your desired length and hold it down with your thumb. Then work a regular sc into the same stitch, through both the front and back loops (see pic 2).

The loop will go right in the 3rd repeat. Keep an eye out!

R 3 - [1 sc, inc] x 2, lp st, inc, [1 sc, inc] x 3 (18)

R 4 - [2 sc, inc] x 6 (24)

R 5 to 9 - 24 sc (x 5 Rnds) (24)

➜ Buckle up, R 10 is a busy one! Here’s what we’ll do:

  • Shape the Wings, instructions are just below.
  • Shape the Cheeks with 2 inc placed right beside each wing.
  • Shape the Tail with 2 dbl inc (3 sc into the same stitch) worked at the back.

To Shape the Wings

  • All wing stitches will be worked into the FLO of a single stitch.
  • Where the pattern says Wing, work: 1 sl st, 1 ch, 3 dc, 1 ch and finish with 1 sl st, all into the same stitch.
  • Place a marker in the BLO of the wing stitch to find it easily in R 11.

R 10 - 2 sc, Wing in FLO, 2 inc, 6 sc, 2 inc, Wing in FLO, 5 sc, 2 dbl inc, 3 sc (32) (see pic 3)

➜ Place markers in the sc marked with red (see pic 3) to guide the eye placement later.

R 11 - 2 sc, 1 sc into BLO, 14 sc, 1 sc into BLO, 14 sc (32)

R 12 - 32 sc (32)

⇢ Now pause your work to embroider the face (see pic 4).

For the Eyes

  • Find the points just above and to the outer side of the markers, 6 points apart, between Rnds 9 and 10 (green dots).
  • From there, make vertical stitches going up 1 pt. Once the eye is the right width, knot the ends inside and cut the excess yarn.

For the Beak

  • Find the two points centered between the eyes, 2 points apart, between Rnds 9 and 10 (red dots).
  • Make horizontal stitches between these two points. Once the beak is the right width, knot the ends inside and cut the excess yarn.

For the Blush

  • Find the points just below the eyes, between Rnds 10 and 11 (blue dots).
  • From there, make horizontal stitches going 1 pt towards the sides. When your blush is done, knot the ends inside and cut the excess yarn.

Pick up where you left off on the body. Just a few decreasing rounds left to meet Chick! 🤩

R 13 - [2 sc, dec] x 8 (24)

R 14 - [1 sc, dec] x 8 (16)

At this point, stuff Chick firmly.

R 15 - dec x 8 (8)

Cut the yarn (leave a long tail) and close off your new buddy. 🐣✨
