Mini Skull

Mini Skull

He’s teeny, he’s sassy, and believe you me, he goes well with everything!

To think he came about almost by accident... I needed a quick Halloween prop, and he turned out way too cute to keep to myself.

Sooo, why not make him into my first free pattern? After all, I wouldn't be here today if it wasn't for all the amazing creators who shared their slice of creativity for free.

Let's spread this obsession!

Let's Get Stitchin'!

R 1 - 6 sc in MR

R 2 - inc x 6 (12)

R 3 - [1 sc, inc] x 6 (18)

R 4 - [2 sc, inc] x 6 (24)

R 5 - [3 sc, inc] x 6 (30)

R 6 - [4 sc, inc] x 6 (36)

R 7 to 11 - 36 sc (repeat 5 Rnds)

⇢ In R 12, we’ll make two sets of 2 increases to shape the cheeks - one on each side of the face, 9 sts apart.

R 12 - 12 sc, 2 inc, 9 sc, 2 inc, 11 sc (40)

R 13 - 40 sc

⇢ Next up, in R 14, we’ll make the three tooths, separated by 1 sc each. 🦷🦷🦷

To make a tooth

All stitches for the tooth will be worked in the FLO of the same stitch (we’ll call it the base stitch).

Work > 1 sl st in the base stitch, 1 ch, 1 hdc in the base stitch, 1 ch, 1 sl st in the base stitch.

Pro Tip

As you work each tooth, place a marker on the back loop of each tooth and the sc in between - 5 markers in total. You’ll be glad in R 15!

R 14 - 18 sc, tooth in FLO, 1 sc, tooth in FLO, 1 sc, tooth in FLO, 17 sc (40)

⇢ Now pause your work to embroider the face. 🙂

Start with the nose

The nose will be 1 pt tall and 2 pts wide, worked with diagonal stitches. Use the center tooth as a reference and count 2 pts up - this will be the starting point for the nose.

With black yarn, make diagonal stitches going 1 pt down and away in either direction. When the nose reaches the desired width, cut the yarn and tie the ends on the inside.

(See picture 2)

On with the eyes

The eyes will be 3 pts tall and 8 pts apart.

From the bottom points of your nose, count 3 pts away in each direction - these will be the starting points for the eyes.

With black yarn, make vertical stitches going up 3 pts. When the eyes reach the desired width, cut the yarn and tie the ends on the inside.

(See picture 3)

Now, the blush

The blush will be 2 pts long, 1 row down from the eyes.

Use the point right below the eyes as your starting point. With pink yarn, make horizontal stitches going 2 pts away in either direction. When the cheeks reach the desired width, cut the yarn and tie the ends on the inside.

Let's finish this skull!

⇢ In R 15, when you reach a tooth, work your sc on the back loop. In the stitches in between, grab both loops again to work your sc.

R 15 - [2 sc, dec] x 4, 8 sc, [2 sc, dec] x 4 (32)

R 16 - [2 sc, dec] x 8 (24)

R 17 - [1 sc, dec] x 8 (16)

⇢ Now stuff your skull firmly. Pack the stuffing tight around the cheeks to reveal their shape.

R 18 - dec x 8 (8)

⇢ Cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for closing. Close off your skull, then hide the tail inside the piece.

Yay, you did it!
